Welcome to streetlight.org

What is possible to accomplish with a burning heart? What does it take to change someone’s life to the better? How can we give hope to people living without hope? Since January 2006 Streetlight has been working with children living in the streets of Tacloban, Philippines. Through our programs and with our time, affection and love, we try to help them build a better future. A future without drugs, prostitution or starvation. Streetlight also welcomes you to participate in our work in changing people’s future, creating hope where there is none. All you need is a burning heart

Dinner with the Johannesens

Had a chance to sit down and read Pinocchio with one of the boys earlier yesterday. A rare quiet moment that's one on one, and I was sure he didn't understand half of the story I was reading, but I still got a huge smile every time we mimed Pinocchio's nose growing, the whale swallowing something, or Pinocchio's heart carved from wood. The big hug and thank-you at the end of the story.

The area around the ports of Tacloban, home to somewhere around sixty or eighty thousand individuals (a ballpark figure at its most generous), is known as Seawall. It is the slum area of Tacloban; no one there is a permanent resident, and no one officially exists according to government records. We took a walk there yesterday afternoon.
